Gluten Free Kiwis London Discoveries

I spent a total of 5 Days in London so figured I best condense them into one blog post.

NZ war memorial on Anzac Day

NZ war memorial on Anzac Day

Highlights:

  • Stumbling across the NZ war memorial on Anzac day – completely by mistake.
  • Sunbathing in Hide park while eating fresh strawberries
  • Shopping at Primark
  • My new Leather boots from top shop.
  • Seeing the Lion King in Theatre
  • Eat at St Pauls – great gluten free, dairy free options for lunch
  • Chasing Squirrels in Hyde Park
  • Catching up with old friends.

Lowlights:

  • Sunburn after sunbathing in hide park, I looked like a lobster.
  • Struggling to find a gluten free section at the supermarket
  • Converting GBP to NZD
  • All the people in town for the Royal wedding

After 5 days couch surfing with friends and having a more laid back look at London (as I had already been on the tourist trail my first visit) I embarked on my journey to the Clink Hostel for my final night before I head off on a 26 tour of 14 countries in Europe using Top Deck Tours.

Coming soon… The Clink.

Gluten Free Kiwi Is London

I waived goodbye to Edinburgh and headed back to London City… last time I visited was 2006 and to be honest I did not think much of London, But I had an entirely different experience this time.

I arrived at Gatwick Airport with my 18.5kg Pack in hand and proceeded to venture to Maida Vale via Tube, Bus and on foot as the Station closest to Katy’s house was closed for repairs over Easter weekend… not so convenient when you are carrying 18.5 kgs on your back. I have a new found respect for fat people carrying around all that extra weight, it must be hard and I can totally see why they do not exercise.

By the time we reached home it was 6pm and I was exhausted, so I head to the local supermarket to find an abundance of convinece food which was gluten free. From Nude smoothies and pre made meals, to conviently sized fruit and vegetable packs to nosh on for breakfast.

The best thing would have to be the fruit in particular… Spanish blueberries which are twice the size of the ones back home and much sweeter… happy times I can tell London is going to be great.

Rain, Edinburgh Castle And Coffee

After a well deserved sleep in, Katy and I ventured off in search of a cooked breakfast and a caffeine buzz. We found a cute little Cafe up an alley just off the royal mile

Ye Old Edinburgh Castle

heading down hill towards new town. I opted for the yet another Omelette with spicy chicken filling, while Katy took the scottish breakfast. The food was fast, filling and the waiter was easy on the eye :)

Being Easter Sunday it was a public holiday so we decided to head to the Castle a.s.a.p to avoid the cues… unfortunately this had been the plan of ever tourist in Edinburgh and coincidentally the worst weather. So we jumped in line (for an hour) in the rain, picked up our ticket, then headed into the castle to see the crown jewels, take some photos and see who this medieval castle had to offer.

After 30 minutes stuck in a line to see the crown jewels… we soon decided that we were the worst tourists ever and could not be bothered queuing, navigation or reading anything. After reaching the crown jewels we both exclaimed “it that it” and proceeded to power walk around the rest of the castle before giving up because we were cold, wet and under caffeinated.

Katys Awesumtastical Rain Poncho

Instead we decided out time was better spent looking for ponchos to avoid the rain, sipping lattes as we deciding what to write in the post cards we had purchased for loved ones.

Once we had warmed up, we messaged our friends to tell them not to bother with the castle as it was to cold and wet, and arranged to meet up for dinner so spent the afternoon scouting out possible places to go for dinner that were gluten free friendly.

After walking along Grassmarket, a popular bar and restaurant street in old town, I stumbled across this place which had a “gluten free pizza” sign out front.
Mamma’s American Pizza Company

30 Grassmarket

Edinburgh, EH1 2JU

Phone: 0131 225 6464
So I thought I would let you all know about it :)
The other guys did not feel like pizza though, so we opted for a little french bistro just up the hill (beside the Thai restaurant which was booked out) that had plenty of AMAZING and mouth watering options to choose from. I had this amazing Roast chicken stuffed with spinach and feta and served with market fresh veggies accompanied by a amazing french red wine. Needless to say there was no food envy tonight as my meal was by far the best :D
Then it was off to bed for a quiet night so we could rise refreshed for our flight to London.

Gluten Free Edinburg Scotland Day Two

Day Two Scotland: Finding Friends & Walking Tour

Without planning, it turned out that several other friends who I met at the University of Otago were visiting Edinburgh for the Easter Weekend.

Edinburgh Castle in the Fog

Edinburgh Castle in the Fog

So after a HUGE SLEEP (I was impressed I managed to stay awake until 11pm last night, but as I was not much fun on the pub crawl my Aussie counter part decided we best get an early night so we could enjoy the rest of our holiday with friends) We wandered off to find Breakfast, Coffee and meet our friends for a free walking tour at 11am on the royal mile.

A gluten Breakfast was not to hard to find, we found a small bistro serving Omelette’s and cooked breakfast 1 block down from blackfriars street on High Street, which seemed to be filled with locals and tourists so I assumed it was good.

I ordered my Omelette with Ham and Tomato without any dairy which was tasty enough, and my attempt at ordering a soy coffee was short lived as the french waitress thought I was asking for skinny milk, I opted to go coffee less and decided to hit up Starbucks much later in the day… after which time my caffeine headache was in full force.

Full of omelets we walked down the royal mile to meet Scott, Ness and their friend from Wellington to embark on a walking tour in the freezing cold. I was happy to have brought 3 layers of merino wool as this wind in Scotland really does go straight through you. I can see why my relations immigrated to Australia and New Zealand all those years ago!

Edinburgh University

Edinburgh University

It i interesting being in a place with such a rich history. The walking tour took us to all the sites on the local mile from castles, to grave yards, to the university, to churches, houses, museums and even a statue of a dog.

I highly recommend these walking tours, which seem to be guided by university students studying history who have a real knack for story telling, Mainly because they make money off the tips at the end of the tour.

Once the tour was over we decided it was time for food so we walked over to the helpfully named “New town” to find something off the tourist trail.

Team Edinburgh

We stumbled across a place with 5GBP lunches with burgers, wraps and salads and decided that was for us. I opted to get a burger without the bun, which was delicious and had a home made patty which was gluten free. One of the friends we met up with had a girlfriend who was gluten free, so he gave me some helpful hints on where to shop when I went to London (the next stop on my trip).

With burgers in our belly we went our separate ways and let our new friends rest up at their hostel and get ready for a walking pub crawl we had signed up to with our walking tour guide from this morning.

Katy and I went out shopping (although it was a fairly fruitless search) then decided to have a few mid afternoon alcoholic ginger beers which from what I could read on the packet I THINK were gluten free… AND DELICIOUS! This is definitely something I would like to find in New Zealand.

Gluten Free Eating on the Run

Eating on the run proved problematic for me as the guys wanted to catch a slice of pizza or something quick, I opted for fries and sauce as it was the only fast food I could see that I could eat while power walking to our meeting point for the pub crawl.

I soon had food envy after a friend ordered kebab meat and salad in a takeaway container… luckily she shared so I had some meat and vege in my belly before hitting old town.

The Pub Crawl.

Gluten Free Pub Crawl

Gluten Free Pub Crawl

The pub crawl sounded fantastic as it cost $11, for this you got taken to 6 bars and one night club, free and subsidised drinks at each bar and free entry to a night club called Hell which was in a old church.

I used this opportunity to test out some local ciders, but decided to stick to vodka soda and lime as I knew to much sugar would upset my eczema and I have found since going gluten free I can not tolerate a lot of sugar or my immune system gets missed up. I decided to opt out of the Whiskey Shots as I was not sure if whiskey was gluten free, but I am pretty sure it is not.

Perhaps the biggest highlight was the 56 drink long jagerbomb train (thats red bull and jagermeister) which the 60+ people on the pub crawl took park in (see the photo). It was a fantastic night, and relatively cheap with the 11$ pub crawl fee covering the majority of my drinks for the night, my friends and I boogied up a storm until the early hours then it was off to bed to sleep up so we were well rested to visit the CASTLE!

Gluten Free Edinburgh Scotland Day One

Day One Scotland: Edinburgh

With no sleep on the plane, fat ankles and a full belly I hoped on a train from Manchester Airport, England to Edinburgh Scotland to meet up with an old friend from University and see and eat everything Edinburgh had to offer (Not including Haggis). I was so well fed on my Singapore Airline flight Christchurch to Manchester (Via Munich, Germany) with 4 meals on the plane that I felt like I did not need to eat for a week.

Edinburgh Church

After jumping off the train and getting my bearings I stumbled across Katy in a beautiful park just across the road. From there we stumbled up a hill (With my 18kg pack on my back) and eventually arrived High St Hostel on Blackfriar St, just off high street the Royal Mile of Edinburgh.

After a quick shower, I was off to see Edinburgh as Katy was allowing me no time to be jetlagged “You can sleep when your dead” she said.

As I did not arrive until the afternoon our first day we spent getting our bearings, getting some flyers and information and figuring out what we needed to do over the next 3 days in Scotland. We opted to take lots of photos (as this was the only sunny day we would see in chilly Scotland), pump me full of caffine so I could stay awake, and embarked on a free pub crawl offered by our hostel, where I sampled the local ciders Scotland had to offer.

We found dinner at a local kebab shop two blocks from my hostel, which did not look the flashest but tasted great and the price was right.  I ordered a baked potato with beans, chicken , chilli sauce, mayo and salad with came to a grand total of 4 Pounds and had no reaction. VICTORY!!!

Stay Tuned for Day 2 in Edinburgh…

Gluten Free Singapore Airlines

It all began April 21st mid morning when I departed on my Journey To the UK and Europe Via Christchurch on Singapore Airlines.

Double Check  Your Gluten Free Dairy Free Meals

I had made sure to check online and have my travel agent double check that my gluten and dairy free meal had been booked on the journey to and home from The UK and Europe (You can only request one type of allergy free meal to begin with, then verify that you want both e.g. I said gluten free when I booked flight, but double checked they could do a gluten free dairy free meal, which was not an option when booking or checking the website (but whenI arrived it was all food I could eat).

My Mother and Neice see me off on my O.E.

Getting The Meal You Need

I was really impressed by the food that came out which was delicious, especially the breakfasts.

My only complaint (thats not really even a complaint) is that for one of my meals a gluten bun came out on my tray, which I am sure was an oversight by an air hostess, but I saw that it looked like the bread everyone else was getting so I just did not eat it). The gluten free bun that came out which WAS gluten free also needed to be warmed or toasted as it was the consitency of sand, but I was so full from the eggs this did not worry me at all :)

One Happy Customer :)

All in all I would have to say Singapore Airline I really love your allergy friendly options and I loved flying with you. I had a much more positive in flight experience with Singapore Air to Europe then I did with my last long haul trip which I think was with either united or american airlines to the States (part of this was an issue with flight center then the airline though as my travel agent was hopeless).

What did they feed me?

Gluten Free Lactose Meals generally consited of:

Breakfasts of Eggs, Mushrooms, Potato, Salmon, Steamed Vege, A Salad or Fruit Salad or dried fruit, corn thins or a gf bun, df margarine, jam, juice/water, and a selection of drinks.

Lunch/Dinner Chicken, Steamed Vege, Rice or Potato, Salad and cold meat, fruit salad, gf bun, df mayo, a selection of drink choices.

I know people always complain about food on planes… but this was nicer then I eat at home, and HEAPS of food.

Great work Singapore Air :)

Gluten Free and My Fitness Pal

As you know I am trying to drop a few kg’s to stay healthier and fit my clothes better. I have found a website with a few awesome tools for calorie counting and menu planning called myfitnesspal.com someone seems to have preloaded heaps of gluten free options into the calorie counter… who ever you are I love you!!!

I find this makes calorie counting so much easier and I can preload meals I eat all the time in to easily add up my daily allowance.

According to this website for my weight, height and age to lose another 5 kgs (I have already lost 5) I need to eat around 1400 calories a day.

I have been doing this and find it really interesting to see just how many calories are in the meals I normally eat (usually heaps) and I am finding new ways to cut calories out of popular meals.

From what I have learnt over the last few months I can stay the same weight if I continue to eat what I am eating, but if I exercise more then I currently do I can lose it weight a lot faster.

Somehow I think my weight loss goal to reach 69 kgs (I started at 79.9) might be foiled by my European holiday (especially after my friend has found gf chocolate croissants in Belgium somewhere). But I will keep you posted on how it goes.

Created by MyFitnessPal – Free Calorie Counter

I seem to be sitting around 74.1kgs and have been for the last 3 weeks so I think I need to get walking and start doing Pilate’s again to ditch the final 5kgs.

Feel free to leave me your weight loss or travel tips so I know someone is reading me blog :)

Gluten Free Calorie Counting Tools

After a month of being disorganised and stress eating I have decided I need to get back on track with my health and start eating for energy, after all food is fuel.

My calorie counting has gone out the window of late with travelling, staying with friends and eating at places where meals have an unknown (and probably high)number of calories.

I signed up for a free account at myfitnesspal today which looks to be a lot easier to use then sharecare.com and I was happy to see that there were heaps of New Zealand food brands already pre loaded into their database, which means no more hand typing in small figures off the back of packets and cans!!!

This morning I sat down to a real treat for breakfast (which is surprizing considering there is very little food in my cuboards).

Gluten Free Beans on Toast

  • 1 Slice of Pavillion Gluten Free Original Bread
  • 1 Serve (half a can) of Delmaine Butter Beans in Italian Sauce.

Beans on toast was a great treat for a chilly autumn morning and reminded me of the good old gluten eating days. I followed this up with a english breakfast tea for a snuggly start to my morning.

Great brekky idea for kids and adults :)

I think it was around 275 calories of my 1400 a day limit :)
